TREATING AND MANAGING COMPLEX CONDITIONS

What is immunoglobulin G?

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is an immunomodulating agent (one that has an effect on the immune system) and is used to treat a number of autoimmune conditions. Another term for immunoglobulin is antibody. Intravenous immunoglobulin G (IVIg) is a sterile, highly-purified IgG preparation made from pooled human plasma stabilized with various ingredients, which is administered through the vein. IgG can also be administered under the skin (subcutaneously). This form is known as SQIg.

What to expect?

The body uses antibodies to identify and neutralize foreign agents (such as bacteria and viruses), and to regulate immune responses. With certain medical conditions like autoimmune diseases, the body’s immune system attacks non-foreign body tissues including muscles, nerves or skin. In others, the immune system may not be able to make the antibodies needed to combat infectious diseases. In these instances, IVIg/ SQIg can be used to replace antibodies necessary for the body to defend itself against infections.

What conditions are treated with IVIg?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves IVIg therapy for the following conditions:
  • Primary Immune Deficiency Disease (PIDD)
  • Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia
  • Kawasaki Syndrome
  • Recent Bone Marrow Transplantation in Patients Aged Greater Than or Equal to 20 Years
  • Chronic B-Cell Lymphocytic leukemia
  • Pediatric Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1)

IVIg may also be prescribed by physicians to treat other conditions including:
  • Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Pupura (ITP)
  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
  • Adult HIV
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy
